New Bedford Man Killed in Plymouth Shooting at Myles Standish State Forest
PLYMOUTH (WBSM) — A New Bedford man was shot and killed in a picnic area at Myles Standish State Park in Plymouth earlier today.
According to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz, Massachusetts State Police and Plymouth Police were notified at 2:35 p.m. today of a male shot with life-threatening injuries in the state forest.
Cruz said that an altercation took place in a picnic area within the park, and a shooting occurred. The victim, identified as Robert Aponte-Flores, 25, of New Bedford, was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess-Plymouth Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Based on Facebook posts from friends and family, Aponte-Flores went by the nickname "Tito."
“This was not a random act of violence and there is no threat to the public,” Cruz said, noting that the investigation is ongoing.
Plymouth Police posted to Facebook that there is a person in custody in relation to the homicide, but that it was not the shooter.
The investigation is being handled by Massachusetts State Police, who have jurisdiction over the state forest, police said.
