PLYMOUTH (WBSM) — A New Bedford man was shot and killed in a picnic area at Myles Standish State Park in Plymouth earlier today.

According to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz, Massachusetts State Police and Plymouth Police were notified at 2:35 p.m. today of a male shot with life-threatening injuries in the state forest.

Cruz said that an altercation took place in a picnic area within the park, and a shooting occurred. The victim, identified as Robert Aponte-Flores, 25, of New Bedford, was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess-Plymouth Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Based on Facebook posts from friends and family, Aponte-Flores went by the nickname "Tito."

“This was not a random act of violence and there is no threat to the public,” Cruz said, noting that the investigation is ongoing.
