NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police have arrested a suspect in the March 19 robbery of the Bank 5 located at 160 County Street.

Police say 43-year-old Mark Demelo robbed the bank at 1:42 p.m. on March 19. They say he fled on foot, and then entered a vehicle. No weapon had been shown, and no injuries were reported.

Thanks to video security systems at the bank and in the surrounding areas, detectives were able to identify the vehicle that Demelo entered shortly after fleeing the bank.

Further investigative work by detectives located the vehicle on March 24 outside a residence on Dudley Street. Police learned that Demelo had been staying the residence, and after a search warrant was executed, found clothing where Demelo was staying that matched the description of clothes the bank robber was wearing at the time of the crime.

Demelo was arrested and charged with unarmed robbery.
