NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police are investigating an armed bank robbery earlier today in the city's West End.

According to New Bedford Police, a male suspect entered the Mechanics Cooperative Bank located at 1238 Kempton Street at approximately 4 p.m. this afternoon. He showed a firearm and demanded money before leaving the scene. Police say he did make off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police say that West End patrol units responded to the scene, and that the investigation is now being furthered by detectives assigned to the Major Crimes division.
