About 40% of Massachusetts communities are in the final planning stages of implementing early voting in the state. The 2014 provision allows for voting in state and federal final elections up to two weeks before they take place.

New Bedford is still ironing out the details for the upcoming election.

Election Commissioner Maria Tomasia tells WBSM News she's not surprised over half the state is still working on the process. "To put this new plan into effect I think is a little too much for a lot of communities who are afraid of people getting the wrong ballots," said Tomasia. "They're afraid about how this is going to be handled, how this is going to affect the rest of the election."

New Bedford must still select what locations people will be able to vote early at, and during odd hours. Early voting is slated to take place between October 24 and November 4.
