Though national parks are still closed due to the partial government shutdown, the head of New Bedford's own federal tourist attraction is taking on a new role out of state.

Jennifer Nersesian, Whaling National Historical Park Superintendent, is leaving the city later this month to supervise the Gateway National Recreation Area in New York and New Jersey.

Nersesian tells WBSM News her new position has her overseeing the operations of an urban park, much like New Bedford's.

Nersesian has served as the Superintendent of the Whaling National Historical Park for nearly five years, and assumes her new position later this month.

A going away party was held in her honor Wednesday night at the Whaling Museum.
