The New Bedford Public Schools system has three middle schools. You would think that all three schools are the same, but there are differences.

This report looks at the differences, how the schools rank against middle schools across Massachusetts, and how they rank against each other.

Normandin, Keith and Roosevelt were once Grade 7-9 junior high schools before they were rebranded as Grade 6-8 middle schools.

U.S. News & World Report ranks Roosevelt Middle School at 199 Frederick Street as New Bedford's best, and No. 255 out of 487 Massachusetts middle schools. The publication said the student population at Roosevelt Middle School is 778 students.

Roosevelt has a 10:1 student/teacher ratio, according to U.S. News & World Report, "which is better than that of the district."

The report said Roosevelt has a 68 percent minority student enrollment, and that the student population is made up of 47 percent female students and 53 percent male students.

Keith Middle School at 225 Hathaway Boulevard is New Bedford's second-best, according to the publication, at No. 311 in the Commonwealth. The total enrollment at Keith is reported to be 870 students.

Keith has a 9:1 student/teacher ratio, also better than the district.

Keith's minority student enrollment is 62 percent. The student population is made up of 49 percent female students and 51 percent male students, according to the report.

Normandin Middle School at 81 Felton Street is New Bedford's third-best, ranked No. 361 of 487 Massachusetts middle schools. U.S. News & World Report stated Normandin has a 1,051 student population with a 13:1 student/teacher ratio.

The school has a student population of 47 percent female and 51 percent male students. The minority student enrollment at Normandin is 54 percent.

The publication uses several factors in determining middle school rankings including reading and math proficiency and reading performance, among other things.
