New Bedford’s Mercy Meals and More Holding Fundraiser on April 4
A New Bedford-based program that provides breakfast to the homeless six days a week is now asking for your support to keep doing the work it does.
Mercy Meals and More is holding a comedy show fundraiser next month at the United Fishermen Club on Orchard Street in New Bedford.
Mercy Meals and More at 634 Purchase Street offers breakfast to all those who come in, no questions asked. Program Director David Motta said Mercy Meals is serving more meals now than ever before.
"There's more need," he said. "We're seeing new faces everyday – young, old and families. With everything so costly, people are between a rock and a hard place."
Motta and Board Vice President Susan Raposo joined Townsquare Sunday to discuss their work and the fundraiser on April 4.
With the cost of food rising, Motta said Mercy Meals needs all the help it can get.
"The cost of eggs is outrageous, and we use 15 dozen per day," he said. "We have partners that do a great job for us, the Full Plate Project, McDonalds, Gold Medal Bakery in Fall River, and others who do a lot for people in the community."
Mercy Meals and More opens a clothing room every morning where people can find hats, gloves and other donated items, and also offers a foot clinic every Thursday.
Raposo said Mercy Meals raises money a variety of ways, including donations, grants and fundraising events. Revenue from the comedy show is about 10 percent of the kitchen's annual budget.
The April 4 event includes a buffet catered by Cove Surf and Turf, a raffle table and comedy provided by Funny4Funds. Tickets are $45 per person, and can be obtained at funny4funds.com. There will be no tickets sold at the door.
