New Bedford’s Me & Ed’s Restaurant Permanently Closing
One of New Bedford's most beloved restaurants will be closing permanently. The owners of Me & Ed's Restaurant, located on Brock Avenue in the deep South End of New Bedford, have decided to call it a career.
If you find it hard to believe that they are closing, it may be for good reason. A Standard-Times article published nearly three years ago to the day caused some serious confusion about the status of the restaurant. According to ownership, an unfortunate result of the article was that it led to many of their customers thinking the restaurant was closing.
This time, however, the impending closure is real. The perennial powerhouse in the New Bedford Chowderfest will serve its final meals over Memorial Day weekend. According to a Facebook post, Me & Ed's will permanently close its doors after dinner on May 29, 2021.
"We ask that you please respect our families and our team during these last two weeks as even in the wake of such notice they continue to stay obligated in serving you all for our last run," the post reads.
The restaurant was opened by two brothers, Carl and Ed Pimentel, in1964. Ed was "Ed." Carl was "Me."
In 1999, Peter Lorenco and his family bought the business. They have owned it ever since. While Peter's son, Corey, is in the restaurant industry, he does not want to take over the restaurant. His takeout and catering business, On the Go, has been booming in Mattapoisett for years.
"Our catering work is insane," Corey Lorenco said. "People don't know how much work and how expensive it is to run a big restaurant like Me & Ed's."
