A New Bedford man illegally riding his all terrain vehicle on city streets made a failed getaway attempt after being pursued by police.

New Bedford Police say around 5pm Tuesday, officers began pursuing three ATV riders in the area of Sutton Street and Shawmut Avenue after Gang Unit officers recognized two riders as part of the "bike life" movement.

Police began pursuit, but the riders split up. Officers followed one of the riders to Sutton and Highland Streets, where his ATV stalled. When he couldn't get it started again, he fled on foot. But police set up a perimeter in the neighborhood, and soon arrested 21-year-old Nicholas Paul Miller of New Bedford.

Miller is charged with unsafe operation of a snow recreational vehicle, failure to stop for police, and operating with a suspended license.

Miller was previously arrested along with three other men in September 2014 after the group tried stealing two ATVs from a residential garage.
