FALL RIVER - A New Bedford man has been indicted on assault charges after allegedly attacking an off-duty Fall River police officer this past January.

The Herald News reports that a Bristol County grand jury returned several indictments August 3 against Calvin Copeland, 19, after he allegedly punched a police officer in the eye with brass knuckles, causing serious facial injuries, as the officer tried to break up a fight in which Copeland was engaged, also assaulting another man with a hunting knife.

Copeland is charged with assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, carrying a dangerous weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon.

He will be arraigned in Fall River Superior Court on August 29.
