New Bedford Man Chased by State Police, Crashes Car
A New Bedford man crashed his car Thursday night while being pursued by State Police.
At 10:13 p.m. Thursday, a trooper from the Dartmouth Barracks observed the driver of a 1996 Honda Accord commit motor vehicle violations on Route 195 eastbound in Westport. The same vehicle had reportedly failed to stop for Fall River Police earlier in the night. The suspect refused to stop for the trooper, and Troop D Headquarters authorized the trooper to pursue the motor vehicle. Another cruiser joined the pursuit.
A short time later the suspect vehicle got off Route 195 at Penniman Street in New Bedford. The cruisers terminated their pursuit. Troopers, however, observed a fluid trail that the fleeing motor vehicle left on the roadway, and followed the trial to the end of Penniman Street. There, bystanders waved them toward Clark Street, where a trooper saw the suspect’s Honda crashed into a parked car.
The suspect tried to run away, but was captured at approximately 10:22 p.m. by Trooper Ryan Toolin after a brief foot pursuit. Follow-up investigation revealed that the vehicle was neither registered nor insured, and that the plates on it belonged to another vehicle.
The suspect is identified as 20-year-old Helder Luz of New Bedford. He was charged with failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, making unsafe lane change, breakdown lane violation, failure to stop/yield at a traffic signal or sign, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, attaching plates and resisting arrest.
Luz was booked at the Dartmouth Barracks.
