New Bedford Police have arrested a man suspected of breaking into cars in the West End over the weekend.

29-year-old Stephen Tavares was arrested early Sunday morning after police received reports of a man possibly breaking into vehicles in the area of Chancery and Parker Streets. When police arrived, they saw Tavares get out of a parked car. He fled on foot but was soon caught after a brief foot chase by police.

Police recovered a GPS, CD's, a phone, and other personal items reported stolen from a car on Chancery Street. Police also found a box cutter, a knife, and a screwdriver on Tavares' person.

Tavares has been arraigned in New Bedford District Court on charges of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, larceny exceeding $250, and possession of burglary tools.
