NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford Police arrested a man on illegal firearm charges while he was staying at a hotel in the city.

The incident dates back to December 4, when patrol units were dispatched to the Marriott Fairfield Inn in response to an emergency call for assistance.

While at the scene, police located a Jennings .22-caliber handgun with a defaced serial number, a magazine and ammunition in one of the rooms.

Police said the firearm was determined to belong to Joshua Butler, 31, from New Bedford.

While at the hotel, Butler was taken into custody and charged with possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number and ammunition without a license.
