NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A Lynn man has been charged with murder after a man was fatally stabbed in New Bedford late Thursday night.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, New Bedford Police were called to the area outside 1304 Acushnet Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. on October 3 for a report of a male stabbing victim.

WBSM News passed through the scene shortly before police arrived and saw a body sprawled on the ground in the southbound lane of Acushnet Avenue as another man stood by a vehicle in the street, talking on the phone and directing traffic around the victim.

According to the D.A.’s Office, the victim a 51-year-old man, was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. His identity has not been released.

The suspect, identified as Angel Avelino, 32, of Lynn, has been apprehended and charged with murder.

The D.A.’s Office said Avelino is expected to be arraigned Monday morning in New Bedford District Court.

Massachusetts State Police detectives, New Bedford Police and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Homicide Unit prosecutors are actively investigating the homicide. No further information has been released.

An Angel Avelino from Lynn was arrested in 2019 on warrant charges of Class B drug possession, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and no inspection/sticker.

An Angel Avelino of Lynn was also arrested back in June on “three default warrants and one straight warrant, and two warrant charges for shoplifting by asportation, shoplifting of shopping cart, assault and battery and larceny from building,” according to the Lynn Daily Item.
