NEW BEDFORD — The motorcyclist killed in a crash on Rt. 18 in New Bedford on Thanksgiving has been identified as 49-year-old city resident Juan Ruiz.

Massachusetts State Police said Ruiz was heading north on Rt. 18 at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday on his Suzuki GSXR10 motorcycle when he crashed near the I-195 overpass.

According to state police, the motorcycle "failed to negotiate" a right-hand curve approaching the overpass before hitting the left side guard rail.

Ruiz was thrown from the motorcycle, which continued on a northbound trajectory without a rider and crossed the Coggeshall Street intersection, state police said.

The motorcycle sideswiped the wall of a hair salon at 1104 Acushnet Ave. before hitting the back of a parked Toyota 4Runner, then coming to a stop on Acushnet Avenue.

Ruiz suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said he was taken from the scene by the Chief Medical Examiner's Office.

The crash remains under investigation.
