New Bedford Area Gas and Diesel Prices Are Soaring Again

Ah, the good old days when gas prices were reasonable and eating seafood and steak was affordable. Prices are soaring for everything from food to gas to clothing, and the experts say we may not have seen the worst of it yet.

Wednesday was one of those days that I saw one set of gas prices on the way to work and a slightly higher set of prices on the way home. It appeared for a brief period as though prices at the pump might be retreating, but not so much.

AAA Northeast says the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Massachusetts was $4.24 on Wednesday, up from $4.22 on Tuesday. A month ago, the price per gallon was $4.18. It was $2.80 a year ago.

The record high price for a gallon of gas in Massachusetts was $4.35 set on March 11, 2022.

Bristol and Hamden Counties currently have the least expensive gas in Massachusetts on average while the most expensive gas, more than $5 per gallon, can be found in Middlesex County and on the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard

Two years ago this week, I filled up for $1.42 in Seekonk.

What is really alarming is how high and how fast the price of diesel fuel is rising. The average price for a gallon of diesel fuel in Massachusetts on Wednesday was $6.10, up six cents from Tuesday.

The trucks that haul food and other supplies to the area stores rely on diesel and increased diesel prices mean higher prices for the things we buy.

Wednesday's $6.10 price per gallon for diesel was a Commonwealth record.
