Wednesday was one of those days that I saw one set of gas prices on the way to work and a slightly higher set of prices on the way home. It appeared for a brief period as though prices at the pump might be retreating, but not so much.

AAA Northeast says the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Massachusetts was $4.24 on Wednesday, up from $4.22 on Tuesday. A month ago, the price per gallon was $4.18. It was $2.80 a year ago.

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
