One of the people behind the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center says the facility will be more than a museum.

Executive Director Laura Orleans tells WBSM News, "the fishing industry is alive and while it faces its challenges, they are not ready to be relegated to a glass case. The idea is to preserve history, but that also this would be a place to discuss the contemporary port as its happening right now, and look to the future as well."

The Center is already organizing education programs, both in the classroom and at waterfront locations, to give students a better understanding of the fishing industry.

The Fishing Heritage Center still needs a permanent home. Initial plans had called for the center to be located in a refurbished Mariners Home within the National Park. Those plans however fell through, and now Orleans is looking elsewhere.

Orleans is wishing the New Bedford Port Society "all the best" in raising enough money to restore the historic Mariners Home.
