If you're like me, you shudder when you see the yellow paper bills stuffed in an envelope with your town's logo. It’s everybody’s favorite time of year: water bill time.

My water bill has skyrocketed over the past four to five years. No surprise that the summer water bill is always the highest. The best part? It always seems to arrive just a few weeks before Christmas.

Merry Christmas, indeed.

Since going solar at my house, I’ve become more conscious about conserving. I'm not going to pose as an environmentalist. Sure, it’s great to save the planet, but let’s be honest – it’s also great to save money. With inflation as high as it is, every little bit counts.

That’s why an offer from some local communities really caught my eye. Several cities and towns across Massachusetts are offering to absorb part of the cost of rain barrels from The Great American Rain Barrel Company.

These barrels are designed to capture rainwater and store it for when you need it. A spigot and hose installed on the side allow you to reuse the rain to water your lawn or garden.

New Bedford and Fairhaven are two SouthCoast communities offering the discount. The barrels come in four different colors and hold 60 gallons of rainwater. They typically retail for $119, but if you order through select towns, you can get one for just $89.

To order, visit The Great American Rain Barrel Company and select “Massachusetts” under community programs. In addition to New Bedford and Fairhaven, the communities of Bridgewater, Seekonk and Yarmouth are also offering the discount.
