New Bedford City Councilor Abreu Finalist for Fairhaven Town Administrator
FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — Veteran New Bedford City Councilor Ian Abreu has confirmed he is a finalist for the position of interim Fairhaven Town Administrator.
When contacted by WBSM, Abreu declined to comment further, saying to do so would be "inappropriate."
WBSM has learned that Abreu will interview with a three-member search committee on Monday, December 9 and is one of four finalists for the interim position. The committee will make a recommendation to the full select board.
Abreu, elected last year to his fifth term as an at-large councilor, faces re-election in 2025. He served as city council president in 2022, first vice president in 2023, and is second vice president this year.
Abreu owns Silmo Syrup and is co-owner of Surfside Creamery in the city's South End. He served as the Director of Business of the One SouthCoast Chamber for over 10 years.
A city councilor serving as administrator of another community is not unprecedented locally. Fall River City Councilor Shawn Cadime is the Town Administrator for Seekonk and is under consideration for the same position in Dartmouth.
The Fairhaven Select Board and former Town Administrator Angeline Lopes Ellison parted ways in October.
