A fatal pedestrian accident is prompting action by the New Bedford City Council.

Ward Three Councilor Henry Bousquet has filed a motion asking the Council's Traffic Commission to consider installing a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Sawyer and Myrtle Streets.

89-year-old Mary Proulx was killed when she was hit by a car while crossing the intersection Saturday evening.

Bousquet tells WBSM News the hill on Sawyer Street may be a contributing factor to the ongoing speed problem in the neighborhood.

"Folks are trying to climb it when they're leaving the stop sign on County [street] and they're coming down the hill from Mt. Pleasant Street at that stop sign. I think it just tends to be slightly faster travel than it probably should be. That's my theory, anyway."

Bousquet has filed similar motions before without success.

The Ward Three Councilor is also requesting a radar sign and traffic enforcement in the area of Tradewind Street, where similar speeding problems have been reported by residents.
