Someone once said April showers bring May flowers. True enough. April is indeed a soggy month, but the merry month of May is the cloudiest month of them all – at least in New Bedford.

"The cloudier part of the year begins around November 10 and lasts for 7.5 months, ending around June 26," Weather Spark notes.

If you must have clouds, I guess that's the best time of year to have them, no?

Weather Spark says, "The cloudiest month of the year in New Bedford is May, during which on average the sky is overcast or mostly cloudy 52% of the time."

Now, back to those April showers. While they may seem plentiful, April is not New Bedford's wettest month.

Weather Spark says, "The month with the most days of rain alone in New Bedford is May, with an average of 9.2 days." Rain alone means as opposed to snow alone or a mix of rain and snow. May 22 is the most likely day of the month to experience rain alone.

There is good news for those of us who would rather walk on the sunny side of the street.

"On average, there are 205 sunny days per year in New Bedford," according to BestPlaces.net. The U.S. average is 205 days of sunshine. How about that? We are average.

The annual BestPlaces Comfort Index for New Bedford is 7.0 (with 10 being the best), "which means it is more comfortable than most places in Massachusetts."

New Bedford gets, on average, 51 inches of rain each year. The national average is 38 inches.

New Bedford sees an average of 35 inches of snow each year. The national average is 28 inches.
