New Bedford City Council Votes Down Attempt To Rescind 44% Pay Raise

The City Council voted down a motion Thursday night to rescind a 44 percent pay raise the body gave itself in 2012.

Councilors Brian Gomes, Deborah Coelho and James Oliveira blasted the motion's backers, new Councilors Naomi R.A. Carney and Dana Rebeiro, by saying the pair was acting under pressure from the media.

Rebeiro said the attacks from other councilors were unfair and that she proposed the motion to keep a campaign promise.

The motion failed 2-9. Rebeiro and Carney were the only yes votes.
