New Bedford residents may soon have to go through a new process in order to hold a yard sale.

The New Bedford City Council will be taking up the issue at their next meeting, in an effort to cut down on yard sales that are held almost every weekend, and in some cases, nearly every day. Some councilors feel those yard sales abuse the system, and could constitute a business rather than your typical spring cleaning.

Councilor at Large Denis Lawrence tells WBSM News yard sales in the city are illegal to begin with.

Lawrence says one solution would be an online permitting process, that would allow residents to hold up to three yard sales a year. Yard sales held without a permit would most likely be shut down, though it's not yet clear how it would be enforced.

The City Council will discuss the matter at their September 27th meeting.
