NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford’s community access television station recently won five awards and can say it ranks among the best in the northeast.

The New Bedford Cable Network was awarded a first place, three second places, and a third place finish in different categories as part of the annual ceremony held by the Northeast Chapter of the Alliance for Community Media, covering community television stations across New England and New York.

The ceremony was held in Burlington, Vermont on November 16.

“The talented team at New Bedford Cable Network delivers outstanding programming,” Mayor Jon Mitchell said. “Being honored among the best in New England and New York is certainly no surprise to City residents who have seen their first-class productions over the years.”

New Bedford’s Dana Debarros and Suzanne Richard won first place in the About Access & Community Media category for their “Ask Peg” videos, described as “an educational piece on how city residents can engage with NBCN.”

Debarros also claimed second place in the Arts & Theatre category for “NB Creative.”

Richard, teaming with New Bedford Public Schools, earned second place in the PSA/Short Program category for “Sleep on It.”

New Bedford also won second place in General Talk Show for “In the Toy Box,” by Charlene Rocha Arruda, Matthew Arruda and Kevin Belli.

Richard and Norm Meltzer took third place in Sports Programming for “Schvitz’n with Norm.”
