New Bedford’s Seaport Art Walk Returns With Powerful Stories
Looking for something to do this summer? Why not take a walk along the New Bedford waterfront and enjoy works of art created by local and regional outdoor artists for the 2025 Seaport Art Walk.
What Is the Seaport Art Walk?
The Art Walk opened Thursday, July 10 as part of the AHA! Night celebration in New Bedford. Zane Cox, Senior Fellow of Art-Based Initiatives for New Bedford Creative, joined Townsquare Sunday to review the artwork and the artists who contributed to this year's walk.
"This is our 12th year for the Seaport Art Walk," Cox said. "It's a beautiful setting and each year we have a chance to beautify the waterfront even more."
This Year’s Theme: Revolution/Evolution
Cox said the theme of this year's walk is "Revolution/Evolution," inviting artists to explore how New Bedford continually reshaped itself through resistance, innovation and contributions from those whose stories have been overlooked. Cox said a "third-party review team" selects the participating artists each year.
Meet the 2025 Artists
"The contributing artists come from everywhere, including two from New Bedford and three from other locations in New England," Cox said. "There is one artist from Chicago, Mays Bird-Murphy, who has worked with students from Our Sister's School on a piece called Changemakers Club. Other artists include Brooke Doherty, Manny Fraser, Ed McAloon and Jill Strait."
Returning Installations You’ll Want to See
This year's Art Walk is also bringing back two powerful installations from past years, including a piece created by Eric Lintala entitled Homage to the Wampanoag Nation. Also displayed along the walk will be large-scale photo panels, displaying work by five local artists who normally show their work indoors.
Where and When to Visit
The Seaport Art Walk has a starting point of Tonnessen Park, near Pier 3, and runs all along MacArthur Drive, ending at Coast Guard Park. The Art Walk exhibits will be available for public viewing through the end of October.
