NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police have arrested a city man for allegedly possessing stolen property and who also had two warrants out for his arrest.

Police said that at about 2 a.m. this morning, officers responded to a call regarding a masked man wearing a sweatshirt and backpack trying car doors at the intersection of Tremont Street and Elm Street.

Officers located the suspect, identified as Jonathan Navarro, 19, of New Bedford. A background search revealed he had two active warrants for his arrest.

According to police, a search of Navarro’s backpack turned up a laptop that was later determined to be registered to Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, and they said he was also found in possession of a stolen scooter.

Navarro was arrested on the two warrants and also charged with larceny under $1200, receiving stolen property under $1200, and disturbing the peace.

Police said Navarro also has “numerous open cases in New Bedford District Court for a variety of offenses including (assault and battery) on a police officer, carrying a dangerous weapon, A&B with a dangerous weapon, providing a false name and resisting arrest.”
