NEW BEDFORD (1420 WBSM) — Sixteen people were displaced Friday afternoon as New Bedford firefighters battled a blaze in an apartment over a florist shop on Acushnet Avenue.

Just before 4 p.m. on December 2, multiple 911 calls came in reporting smoke coming from the fourth floor of Mendonca’s Florist Shop, located at 1364 Acushnet Avenue.

According to a post from the New Bedford Fire Department, Engine 8 arrived and found a large volume of fire on the fourth floor. Ladder 4 ventilated the roof and a second alarm was called to assist with deploying hoses and searching the inside.

There were no injuries, but 12 adults and four children were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross and New Bedford Emergency Management.

The fire comes on the heels of two other fires over Thanksgiving weekend last week, as first an abandoned building caught fire on Purchase Street last Friday, and then a Sydney Street fire early Saturday morning displaced nine people, including a 94-year-old woman.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
