NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford Police are seeking a criminal charge against a city man who said he accidentally shot his gun Wednesday night in the city's West End.

According to police, units responded at about 9 p.m. on September 11 to the area of Clark Street and Summer Street regarding a report of a fight in progress. They arrived to find the parties involved had fled the scene.

Officers learned that a shot had been fired by a licensed gun owner, who alleged that it was an accidental discharge of the firearm.

No injuries or property damage were found. Police did not reveal the name of the person who fired the shot.

Police said a charge for discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building will be requested before the court.
