Nelson Macedo, Former New Bedford Councilor, Dies at 61
NEW BEDFORD - A former New Bedford city councilor has passed away.
Nelson Macedo passed away Wednesday night. He was 61 years old.
Macedo served as the City's Ward 5 councilor from 1980 to 1992. He also served as New Bedford's acting mayor for three months after John Markey resigned the position to become a District Court judge.
Macedo was the senior custodian at New Bedford District Court and CYO Director at the Kennedy Youth Center. He also served as a longtime umpire for the Whaling City Youth Baseball League.
Macedo ran two unsuccessful campaigns in 2013 and 2017 to reclaim the Ward 5 seat, after Jane Gonsalves and Kerry Winterson announced they would not be seeking re-election those years, respectively.
