This very popular Portuguese dessert has been made into an ice cream flavor and we need to try it.

Pastel de nata has long been one of the most popular Portuguese desserts. This custard tart brings back so many memories of me sitting at Sunrise Bakery and trying my first one at the age of eight.

Imagine being able to taste that, but in ice cream form. Well, a New Jersey-based company, Nasto's Ice Cream, widely known for its Italian desserts, has managed to transform our prized custard tart.

According to Nasto's, this flavor has been a huge hit, but we here on the SouthCoast could have told them it would be, so we aren't surprised. They can also make it into a milkshake; yes, it's my Portuguese dessert dream come true.

So how can you get your hands on this ice cream? The company has plans to get wider distribution.

This family-owned and operated business now has three generations dedicated to its growth and success while maintaining the family authenticity that made them so popular.

Dean Nasto, who is part of the third generation of Nastos, shared where the idea came from to make this ice cream and what the plans are to get some closer to us.

He said it started when a local bakery approached Nasto's about wanting to sell its pastries. The bakery also nudged them to see if they could make a ice cream flavor around the nata.

As far as getting some up here any time soon, Nasto said nothing is in the works just yet.

"There are no definite plans to distribute, although the flavor has been a hit," he said. "As soon as it hits the shelves it's gone."

I have a feeling if we collectively get together and comment on Nasto's Facebook post we can make something happen. One of the local creameries will carry it by next summer. Mark my words.
