Since the conception of the project, numerous city leaders say the construction in South Terminal has been known as the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal.

But in a release from the state this week, the development has been referred to as the Massachusetts and the Southcoast Marine Commerce Terminal, omitting New Bedford.

Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Maeve Bartlett tells WBSM News the references were meant to include the rest of the state, not exclude New Bedford.

Mayor Jon Mitchell chalks the name change up to beauracracy. He tells WBSM News the name always has, and always should include the host city.

Mitchell says he will fully support any legislation drafted by State Senator Mark Montigny that aims to keep New Bedford in the terminal's title.

Secretary Bartlett says the state is open to discuss the issue.
