The City of New Bedford is asking the Mass. Gaming Commission to extend the deadline for casino developers to submit applications for a casino license in Southeastern Massachusetts.

The current deadline is in July, but the City wants it moved  to September.  Mayor Jon Mitchell says the city needs the time to continue its assessment on how a casino might impact New Bedford.

The Mayor  also released a statement updating the public on what steps the city has taken to learn more about casino development.  The Mayor says he's sought out expert legal counsel to help New Bedford with its planning.

He's also visited Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to see how a casino has impacted that community.

The city has also formed a working group to meet with developers, including K-G Urban Enterprises which hopes to build a waterfront casino at the former Cannon St. Power Station.  .
