Deepwater Wind announced on Tuesday that they would be opening an office 555 Pleasant St., on the top floor of the Standard-Times building in downtown New Bedford.

Speaking on his weekly radio program, Mayor Jon Mitchell said that this development will allow city officials to better market New Bedford to other companies.

"We can go to others and say 'you know what we think you should set up shop here too,'" said Mitchell "the more activity we can establish here, the more that there's a cluster, the more jobs that we're going to see in the long run, so this is the way we want things to play out."

While Mayor Mitchell is welcoming the potential growth of this industry some in the fishing industry have expressed concerns that it will disrupt their ability to carry out their work.

However, Mitchell said that in areas where offshore wind is operational, wind farms and fisherman have been able to co-exist.

"There are some 84, at last count, utility scale wind farms, not just windmills, but wind farms going in Northern Europe," said Mitchell "and in Northern Europe it hasn't been a problem and I think it's really just sort of an education campaign that has to happen and I'm happy to facilitate."

It was also announced that a survey boat for OffshoreMW was expected to arrive at the Marine Commerce Terminal.
