MIDDLEBOROUGH — Chief Joseph Perkins reports that the Middleborough Police Department responded to a fatal crash involving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) early this morning.

According to a release from Chief Joseph Perkins, Middleborough Police responded to a 911 call at approximately 12:40 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, of a report that an ATV had crashed in a cranberry bog off of Stone Street. The caller stated the side-by-side type ATV had crashed into a pond and was submerged with the operator still inside.

Upon arrival at the scene, MPD personnel entered the pond and attempted to rescue the operator.

The operator, a 49-year-old male from Middleborough, was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, where he was pronounced dead.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

Police say the operator was the sole driver of the vehicle, and no other persons were involved in the accident.

The accident is under investigation by the Middleborough Police Department and the Massachusetts Environmental Police.
