A massive double blaze Thursday night destroyed a Middleboro home and heavily damaged an adjacent building.

Crews from nine communities responded to the three-alarm fire on Wareham Street that was first called in around 5:20 p.m. The family made it out safely and no injuries were reported. While the fire was under control in about 90 minutes, the scene wasn't cleared until about 11 p.m.

Fire Chief Lance Benjamino says while the fire remains under investigation, it appears to have started with a Christmas tree on the first floor.

It was the third major fire in downtown Middleboro within a 36-hour period. On Wednesday there was a structure Fire at Montello and East Main streets, and two elderly people were rescued. Also Wednesday there was an early morning fire on Wareham Street.
