The battle over education funding and equity may be about to heat up.

The mayors and school officials from Brockton, New Bedford and Worcester plan to hold a briefing Wednesday on the "severe education challenges facing Massachusetts' Gateway Cities, the need for legislative action, and an update on the possibility of a lawsuit."

The municipal officials will be joined by attorneys who are working with those cities and other education experts to provide a report on the conditions of schools, potential legislative action and to answer questions about a possible lawsuit.

The Legislature and Gov. Baker are ramping up K-12 spending this budget cycle, but lawmakers have not yet coalesced around education funding formula changes sought by many school districts. Local school officials have long been mulling their legal options while calling on Beacon Hill to take bold steps to address longstanding gaps in education quality from community to community.

The briefing is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday on the fourth floor of One State Street in Boston.
