Mayor Jon Mitchell says he wants safe schools in the City of New Bedford, and he believes Superintendent. Dr. Pia Durkin and her staff are working to make that happen.

The Mayor says after several altercations between students and teachers at New Bedford High School, the Superintendent made some changes......

Speaking on his weekly radio program on WBSM, the Mayor said the transfers met with the approval of teachers and staff members at the high school.

The Mayor also urged the City Council and others not to "grandstand" on the violence issue.  In some cases he said, the City Council doesn't have all the facts, and Dr. Durkin is moving the school district in the right direction.
