The City of New Bedford is pushing for more liquor licenses.  Mayor Jon Mitchell announced Tuesday, his administration was preparing to file a home rule petition to expand the number of liquor licenses in the City by 25.

Mayor Mitchell tells WBSM News, there seems to be a pent up demand for restaurants in all business districts of New Bedford.  He says those establishments will likely not succeed without serving alcohol....

The measure would first have to clear the City Council, and then both branches of the legislature.   The Mayor has enlisted the support of City Council President Joe Lopes and State Rep. Antonio Cabral and Senator Mark Montigny, to shepard the home rule petition along the way.

A similar effort in 2008 failed to gain enough support on Beacon Hill.
