Mayor: New Owners Looking To Bring PawSox To Providence

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza says he is looking forward to working with new owners of the Pawtucket Red Sox to consider moving the team to a few miles south to Rhode Island's largest city.

Elorza issued a statement Monday following the announcement that Red Sox president Larry Lucchino and several Rhode Island businessmen purchased the Triple A baseball club for an undisclosed price.

Elorza says moving the team could be an ``exciting development opportunity.''

Investor James Skeffington told The Providence Journal the new owners are eyeing land along the Providence River for a new ballpark.

Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien says he is still hoping the PawSox will stay, but was told by the new owners that Pawtucket is not ``on the radar.''

The investors are buying the team from Madeleine Mondor, the widow of longtime owner Ben Mondor. Ben Mondor owned the team from 1977 until his death in 2010.
