MATTAPOISETT (WBSM) — Mattapoisett Police recently arrested a New Bedford man with an illegal firearm who was also a fugitive from justice in New York.

According to a police Facebook post, officers conducted a motor vehicle stop on Route 6 on Friday, December 22 at about 9:32 p.m.

A registration check of the vehicle, a 2009 Acura MDX, indicated the vehicle had an expired inspection sticker, and police said the registered owner, Derrick Costa, 36, of New Bedford, had an active arrest warrant.

Police searched the vehicle and discovered a .38-caliber revolver pistol. Police said it was later learned that Costa also had an active warrant for his arrest out of New York for criminal possession of a firearm.

Costa was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm without a license to carry and being a fugitive from justice.

He was arraigned in Wareham Fourth District Court on Tuesday, December 26.
