Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Shortsleeve is blasting Governor Maura Healey's decision to keep Massachusetts from participating in one of the most significant events to mark the nation's 250th anniversary.

The Great American State Fair is being staged on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for two weeks beginning June 25, 2026. All 50 states and the U.S. territories have been invited to showcase themselves in pavilions along the mall.

World's fairs and universal expositions have been held globally for centuries as a way for nations to showcase themselves to the rest of the world. The Great American State Fair is a way for the states to showcase themselves to the many world visitors expected in Washington for the 250th.

The Great American State Fair Controversy

However, CNN reported that Healey and at least five other governors are refusing to participate.

"While officials said their states' decisions were largely due to costs, a spokesperson for Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, a Democrat, pointed to concerns about the partisan nature of the event," CNN said.

Healey Explains the Taxpayer Cost Concerns

The Boston Herald reported that Healey told WGBH radio last week that Trump "tries to get money into his pocket any which way."

"He invited all the states to participate and wants to charge us to go down and put something on his exhibit, whatever he's creating for Freedom 250, it's just ridiculous," Healey said. "This is taxpayer money."

It's reported that the cost for states to participate in the fair can run over $100,000, a pittance compared to the billions this state wastes on foolishness.

Some suspect that Trump Derangement Syndrome may be in play.

Shortsleeve Responds to the National Mall Boycott

Shortsleeve said Healey "never misses an opportunity to put politics ahead of governing," adding Healey should "work with whoever is in the White House to deliver for the people of Massachusetts" and not look to "score points" with her political base.

"Healey's public disdain for President Trump may generate headlines, but it doesn't make Massachusetts more affordable, safer, or competitive," Shortsleeve said. "We need less political theater and more pragmatic leadership."

CNN reported that "All 50 states and territories will be represented even if some states don't provide input." Gee, what a missed opportunity to showcase New Bedford seafood to visitors to the national fair.
