Deadline Looms to Apply for Massachusetts Home Energy Assistance
With thousands of people experiencing homelessness in Massachusetts and thousands more struggling to afford the housing they have, the realization that the colder fall and winter months are approaching must be terrifying for some.
Inflation has helped drive up the cost of food, utilities and other essential items and can make those struggling anxious about getting by.
If you are one such person, the Massachusetts Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) may be able to help, but you must be prepared to act quickly.
The Massachusetts Department of Health & Social Services says HEAP "is a free resource to help eligible households pay a portion of winter heating bills."
It is free to apply for HEAP assistance.
"You can apply online or in person through a network of local service providers," HSS says. "No matter what type of heating source you have, HEAP may be able to help you pay your winter heating bills."
"All Massachusetts residents are encouraged to explore eligibility for this free program and apply for assistance," HSS says.
The Health & Social Service website has information about program eligibility, how to apply, necessary documents, eligible costs and payment system, funding amount information, related programs, supporting program documents, additional housing resources and more.
There is a guide for folks in New Bedford for help with heating, shelter, legal and other needs. Residents of other area communities can find a list of resources by utilizing the HSS "look-up tool."
The application process for HEAP assistance begins October 1, 2024.
EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this story incorrectly listed October 1 as the deadline to apply for HEAP assistance as opposed to the start date.
