Mass. House Approves Limited Tax Amnesty Plan
The Massachusetts House has approved a limited tax amnesty program for delinquent taxpayers.
The House voted overwhelmingly on Monday to add the measure, sponsored by Republican leader Brad Jones, as an amendment to the state's $36.2 billion budget for the state fiscal year that begins on July 1.
Under the two-month amnesty program, individuals and businesses could pay off their past state tax liabilities but all penalties that had been assessed would be waived.
The proposal calls for up to $5 million of the tax revenue collected under the program to go into a fund that would help local police departments purchase the anti-overdose drug Narcan.
The Senate must still approve the measure.
