Thursday's earthquake was less than a footnote in seismic history, but it certainly has people talking.

The 1.9 magnitude quake was felt throughout New Bedford, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, and other Southcoast communities.

Dr. John Ebel, a geophysicist at the Weston Observatory at Boston College says while the area dodged a bullet, we're not immune to a damaging earthquake.

Thursday's quake appears to have originated in Freetown near Chippaway Road. Many area residents mistook the tremor for an explosion or a large truck passing by.

No damage or injuries were reported.
