If you were an '80s kid like me, there was nothing like hitting up your local mom-and-pop video store on a Friday or Saturday night. This was before the days of Blockbuster Video dominance.

The shelves were arranged by category: drama, horror, action and comedy.

We were suckers for comedy, and one of the comedy kings from the 1980s was none other than John Candy. For a guy born and raised in Canada, Candy was pure Americana and totally '80s.

I especially loved watching John Candy movies with my dad because I knew I’d get to see him crack up at Candy’s mastery of physical humor. Add in a couple pizzas delivered to the door and it was the perfect '80s family night, back when watching movies was a group activity, not a solo one squinting at an iPhone.

A John Candy Celebration for Fans

That’s why I was so thrilled to hear about Canadian Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks (son of Tom Hanks) teaming up to celebrate John Candy with the world. Reynolds will visit Boston’s Shubert Theatre to host a special screening of John Candy: I Like Me. The tour gives fans a chance to experience the documentary together on the big screen and hear directly from Reynolds in person.

What to Expect at the Boston Screening

The new documentary features never-before-seen archival footage, personal stories, and interviews that highlight Candy’s extraordinary career and enduring cultural impact.

Following the screening, Reynolds will take the stage with surprise guests, including Candy’s friends and family.

Supporting a Great Cause

Honoring Candy’s spirit of giving, net proceeds from the tour will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Tickets start at $63.75 and go on sale Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. at BochCenter.org.
