The End Of Daylight Saving Time In 2025
In Massachusetts, clocks will "fall back" on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2:00 a.m. You’ll set your clocks back one hour to 1:00 a.m., giving you an extra hour that day. This switch ends Daylight Saving Time (DST) and starts Standard Time, making mornings brighter but evenings darker earlier.
Why do clocks change? DST began to save energy by extending daylight in the evening during warmer months. In spring, we "spring forward" to move an hour of daylight from morning to evening. In fall, we "fall back" to return to Standard Time. This idea started over 100 years ago to help farmers and save resources during World War I, but today, some argue it’s outdated.
Are we any closer to permanent DST in Massachusetts?
Are we closer to permanent DST? Not much progress has been made. In 2022, the U.S. Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act to make DST permanent, but the House didn’t vote on it, so it stalled. Massachusetts has considered permanent DST or even joining Atlantic Standard Time, but no laws have passed. Other nearby states would need to coordinate for it to work smoothly.
Do all states change clocks? No. Most states follow DST, but Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on Standard Time year-round. U.S. territories like Puerto Rico also skip DST. For now, Massachusetts will keep switching clocks twice a year.
