Massachusetts may be best known for its clam chowder and coastal charms, but when it comes to holiday cheer things seem to be more 'Bah Humbug' than 'Be Merry.'

According to a recent study from Innerbody Research that analyzed what Americans search for online as the holidays approach, Massachusetts lands #9 on the list of the Grinchiest states in the U.S.

So is the Bay State not spreading Christmas cheer this season?

Before you jump to defend Massachusetts and start pointing out numerous holiday displays and events, let's break down what Innerbody Research is really saying.

How the Grinchiest States Were Ranked

Their research tallied up online holiday-related internet searches. So when people around the country started looking up Christmas song lyrics, holiday baking recipes or where to find the best Christmas tree, Innerbody Research tracked it to compare the states that were most excited for the holidays.

While states like West Virginia, Utah and South Dakota were swimming in searches, and thereby ranking high in holiday spirit according to this research, Massachusetts' search numbers were near the bottom of the spectrum.

Does Low Searching Mean Low Holiday Spirit?

However, this doesn't mean we secretly dislike the holidays. Rather I think it says we know what we like at Christmas time already and are steeped in such wonderful holiday traditions, we don't need to search for anything new.
