If you’re looking ahead to retirement and hoping for a place that feels like home, it seems one website doesn’t think you have to go too far.

A recent ranking on WorldAtlas.com listed their “best Atlantic Coast towns for retirees” and two Rhode Island spots made the cut.

Honestly, most people typically think of retiring to Florida on the Atlantic Coast, but World Atlas says Jamestown, Rhode Island and Newport, Rhode Island are each bringing something special to the table too.

Looking over the 11 towns on WorldAtlas’ list, it is clear that the site did not simply look for the most affordable places for people to retire. Instead, they took a more comprehensive look the lifestyle people could enjoy in each of their list locations.

Places where retirees could slow down, connect with their community, explore their new surroundings, were ranked high—Jamestown landed top overall.

Jamestown: A Peaceful Island Escape

According to the site, Jamestown’s location on Conanicut Island offers that peaceful seaside vibe people crave. They have readers picturing themselves on leisurely morning walks along the shoreline, brunching at a café with scenic views, and enjoying afternoon rounds of golf at the Jamestown Golf Course that boasts no-tee-times.

But don’t count out nearby Newport, RI either.

WorldAtlas loved the town’s classic New England charm with a side order of culture and elegance. The art and architecture of the Newport mansions was noted as well as fine dining and extensive wine selection found in Newport’s downtown. They called it “the perfect retirement destination for those who appreciate the finer things in life.”

So whether you picture yourself sipping coffee on a deck watching sailboats pass, or strolling past historic homes and popping in for a gourmet dinner, both Jamestown and Newport offer that easy-going retirement feel with a touch of the refined.
