I imagine most people go USPS. Their shipping dates are pretty cut and dry.
Thursday December 14 is the last day to send gifts by Ground Mail
Tuesday December 19 is the last day for First Class Mail
Wednesday December 20 is the last day for Priority Mail
Friday December 22 is the last day for Priority Mail Express

If you're shipping things through UPS these are the dates they recommend for Christmas arrival.
Monday December 18 last day for 3-day Select
Wednesday December 20 last day for 2nd Day Air
Thursday December 21 last day for Next Day Air
Friday December 22 last day for Next Day Air if your zip code has the Saturday delivery option (not all do)

And if FedEx is your delivery service of choice, here are the dates they recommend shipping by:
Monday December 11 last day for FedEx Smart Post
Friday December 15 last day for FedEx Ground
Monday December 18 last day for FedEx Home Delivery
Tuesday December 19 last day for FedEx Express Saver
Wednesday December 20 last day for FedEx 2nd Day and 2nd Day A.M.
Thursday December 21 last day for FedEx Overnight, Priority Overnight and First Overnight
Monday December 25 last day for FedEx Same Day
