Icy Conditions Thwart New Bedford Drunk Driver’s Getaway
NEW BEDFORD - A city man is arrested on multiple charges after leading police on a short chase in a stolen car.
New Bedford Police observed the stolen vehicle being driven into the Stop and Shop gas station on Kings Highway just after 11 p.m. Tuesday.
As they attempted to get the vehicle to stop, the driver shifted the car into reverse, and spun around due to the icy pavement. The vehicle then drove back onto Kings Highway, spun around, jumped a curb and struck a guardrail, and continued to spin.
Once the vehicle came to a stop, police removed the driver, Jose Furtado, 31, of New Bedford. Furtado was determined to be drunk and was placed under arrest.
Furtado is charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended or revoked license, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, two outstanding warrants, and OUI liquor.
